Major depressive disorder occurs when there are 5
or more symptoms of depression present that last for more than 2 weeks.
It can be caused by a medical condition such as a chemical imbalance in
the brain or it can be triggered by stress, life changes and/or
traumatic events. It can also be brought about by the sudden hormonal
changes experienced directly after child birth, otherwise known as
post-partum depression.
Symptoms of depression:
- Change in sleeping habits
- Fatigue
- Difficulty concentrating
- Change in appetite
- Feelings of worthlessness or guilt
- Agitation and irritability
- Inactivity
- Feelings of hopelessness or helplessness
- Suicidal thoughts or feelings
With major depressive disorder come many risks and complications that
are not experienced by the non-depressed. People with this condition
are more likely, up to 15 percent more likely, to commit suicide. They
also have an increased risk of drug, alcohol and tobacco dependency as
well as a host of health problems.
Despite the fact that major depressive disorder can be easily treated
through a combination of medication and psychotherapy, many people fail
to get the needed medical attention for their condition. Sadly, if left
alone, depression can disrupt lives, destroy relationships and result
in a premature death. That is why it is so important to get help
immediately if you or a loved one has several of the above symptoms and
they do not go away after a few days. Everyone feels down every now and
then, but no one should have to go through life chronically depressed.
